COMPLETE THE 2026 Dorset Dogs on Beaches Consultation TODAY – Closing Date 7 August 2026
Yet again the option to ask for a compromise of dogs off leads before 10am and after 6pm is hidden behind another question. So we have created this short guide to help you find the question to request a compromise and inclusivity for everyone which in turn supports local traders who are seeing a decline in footfall due to the May to Sept dog ban on the only safe and accessible Lyme Regis Sandy Town Beach.

What is your view on the current arrangement (
this means Winter October to April) that dogs may be off lead on this part of the beach outside the summer exclusion period?

“Keep this arrangement” (WINTER)
General Comments
add something like: Dorset Council has already acknowledged that the adjacent beaches are unsuitable for many people with mobility issues. No equivalent safe and accessible area has been provided for disabled dog owners to exercise dogs off lead as required under the Animal Welfare Act. Under the Equality Act 2010, reasonable adjustments should be considered. We therefore request a compromise of dogs off lead before 10am and after 6pm from May to September alongside existing winter access.
Email your COMPLIMENTS
Continue to email your compliments regarding dogs off leads in Winter to both Lyme Regis Town Council and Dorset Council which will go forwards as evidence for the 2026 Dogs on Beaches PSPO Consultation.
How to email your compliments & question
We are aware that COMPLIMENTS, as well as complaints, are being logged by Lyme Regis Town Council, so please CLICK HERE to email BOTH Dorset Council [email protected] and Lyme Regis Town Council [email protected] with your compliments about how inclusive the new dogs off leads PSPO, for example;
– families with young children in pushchairs and dogs
– for those with mobility issues or disabilities and those who unable to use the alternative beaches
– benefit to local businesses as dog owners feel welcomed and return to the dog friendly town
QUESTION: Also ask Dorset Council, to comply with the Equality Act, what provisions have put been in place for those with mobility issue for the period 1 May to 30 Sept when the only safe and accessible Town Beach has a dog ban, meaning dog owners are signposted to adjacent beaches deemed unsuitable for them.
